Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor To Wed Fireman Who Saved Her

The Boston Marathon bombing may be in the past but many lives have been changed forever due to this act of terrorism. However, there is one love story that was created out of this tragedy and that is Roseann Sdoia who lost her leg in the wake of this bombing. Of course, at the time, love was the last thing on her mind.

Even so, her own mother upon seeing the handsome firefighter named Mike Materia who saved her daughter, decided that now would be a good time for her daughter to get to know this nice man. “In the hospital, my mom tried to set me up with him, “ Sdoia said. Also, “She was like, ’Oh, did you see that firefighter? He’s so cute.’ And I was like, ’Mom, I just got blown up.’”

Nevertheless, the mom saw something that the two of them didn’t notice at the time and that was the possibility of a budding romance. Fireman, Mike Materia was the one who rushed to her aid and went with her to Massachusetts General Hospital on that day in April 2013.

Roseann Sdoia was a long-distance runner.

In that marathon who made it near the finish line when the pressure-cooker bombs went off.

During her agonizing ride to the hospital, “I asked him if I was going to die. And he told me that I was going to be OK, that I only had a flesh wound.” After a few days of treatment, Mike visited her again to be sure that was recovering well and that’s when her mother noticed that the two of them were a perfect match!

Sdoia admits, “I was probably not the nicest to him from the get-go. I was in pain. But now we laugh and blame it one the morphine.”

She also adds, “He’s seen me on my worst day.”

Now, they plan to spend one of their best days together later this year around October or November.

She now says about that day in Boston, “I do feel that, in a sense, some things happen for a reason.” In this case, it was a happy ending.
